Many people around the world enjoy gin.Making gin is a great activity to do with friends, and you can get as creative with the ingredients as you please.There are a number of popular flavors to experiment with.You can make your own gin at home with a few ingredients and a little time.Depending on how many botanicals you use in each blend, the amount that you can make with the ingredients listed below will vary.
Step 1: Start with a mixture of plants.
The three ingredients are referred to as the “holy trinity” in gin-making.juniper berries give gin its most basic and classic flavor.When you make your first gin, this is a good starting point.The proportions for a bottle of gin are 35 grams (1.2 ounces) of juniper berries, Coriander seeds, and angelica root.
Step 2: The G-Funk blend is really fruity.
The flavors you find in the peels of fruit are great to use in botanical blends.This one has 3 different fruit peels in it and is called the “G-Funk” gin which is a completely different gin to the first recipe.The amount of this blend is 750 liters.There are Peels of 2 lemons, 2 oranges, and 2 star anise seeds.
Step 3: There is a more exotic blend.
No one except the head distiller of any given gin knows the exact proportions of these ingredients.You can play around with many other flavors if you know the proportions of the basic 3 botanicals.The blend contains 35 grams (1.2 ounces) of juniper berries, 4 grams (0.14 ounces), bitter orange peel, and jasmine flower.
Step 4: Spices in a small cup can be used to create a botanical blend.
The primary flavor in gin is juniper berries, followed by secondary flavors.A botanical blend can consist of anything you want, but some common notes are peppercorn, cardamom, or coriander seed.The proportions of this blend are up to you.The spices are usually between 4 grams and 8 grams.It’s hard to know if a blend is good or not if you don’t have a lot of experience.Use ground-up versions of these botanicals less than 80%.The flavor of ground spice is stronger than that of unground spice.You would use 2 grams of ground Coriander instead of 10 grams in the recipe.
Step 5: Pour boiling water into a glass jar to sterilize it.
It’s important to sterilize your bottle to make sure your jar is clean before you start crafting liquor.Shake the jar a few times after pouring boiling water into it.The jar will be sterile because of the heat.You don’t want to burn your hands when you shake the jar, so make sure you cover it.If you don’t have a place to boil water, you can rinse your jar with hot soapy water.
Step 6: The jar has 25 liters of vodka in it.
The basic starting point for the flavors can be found in vodka, which is the base alcohol.It doesn’t need to be top shelf to use a decent vodka here.It’s important that good vodka is as indistinguishable as possible.If you need help, talk to someone at your local liquor store.The base of your gin should be of a quality that you’d be willing to drink alone.
Step 7: The blend should be put in a jar.
The base alcohol is ready to be sent.The balance of flavor may be thrown off if you spill any out the side.
Step 8: For 24 hours, cover the jar with a lid and place it in a dark place.
It’s a good idea to keep the jar in a cupboard or drawer.The process is similar to steeping tea or coffee.The flavors from the spices will eventually make their way into the vodka and become gin.There is a yellow tint to the liquor here.This has no effect on the taste or drinkability.
Step 9: Then steep for another 12 hours.
At this point, your liquor has a gin flavor with subtle notes of the botanicals you infused it with.If you want to make a certain flavor more prominent, you can add in some more flavors here.If you want the old botanicals to keep developing and releasing their flavors, leave them there when you add the new botanicals.Don’t feel pressured to add more botanicals just for the sake of it, if you take a taste and decide that the flavor is to your liking.
Step 10: The gin should be put through a sieve into a jar.
The jar needs to be at least 750 liters.This ensures that you don’t ruin the flavor by over-stabbing the gin.There are no solid botanicals left in your gin.It is possible that some of the botanicals have been broken up into smaller pieces.If this is the case, you can either sieve again or use a coffee filter.You can run the gin through a water filter if you’re not happy with the yellow color.
Step 11: The gin can be kept out of the sun for up to a year.
The gin is ready to be consumed.You can either store it for a year or try it out immediately with your friends and family.
