As a fruit topping for ice cream, as well as being used in salads, dressings, and pavlovas, the Chinese gooseberry, also known as “kiwi”, is a versatile fruit.It’s an excellent tenderizer for meat.The delicate flesh of the fruit requires careful peeling to avoid injury.Scooping out the flesh with a spoon is a common method of removing skin.You can blanche a fruit to remove the skin.There are three ways to peel a fruit.
Step 1: Hold the fruit in your hand.
Step 2: At the top of the fruit, place the knife or peeler.
To hold a peeler or knife, use your dominant hand.
Step 3: When you feel the skin give under the blade, apply gentle pressure.
To get a hold, you need to make a small nick in the skin.
Step 4: If you want to avoid accidentally cutting yourself, use a sawing motion to peel from the bottom to the top of the fruit.
Don’t cut too deeply or you’ll remove too much of the fruit’s flesh.
Step 5: Use the sawing motion to work your way around the fruit.
Step 6: Use a knife to cut off the ends of the fruit.
Step 7: A spoon is usually a good size of spoon to use.
The spoon should be against the inside of the skin.
Step 8: If you want to remove the flesh from the skin, apply a small amount of pressure against it and turn the fruit with your other hand.
The fruit should come out of the skin when the spoon gets back to the starting point.
Step 9: Put enough water in the pot to cover the fruit.
The water should be brought to a rolling boil.
Step 10: The whole fruit should be blanched for 20 to 30 seconds.
Step 11: Take the fruit out of the water and put it under the cold water.
You should be able to peel the skin off with your fingers when it’s cool to the touch.
