How To Make a Bag out of Paper

Paper bags are a great way to wrap gifts and tote items from one place to the other, and making them is a fun and easy craft you can do at home. You can make simple or ornamental paper bags from any old paper you have around the house, or you can use specific paper that you picked out for this purpose.Small, medium, and large bags can be used for gifts or precious items. They can be decorated and personalized in a variety of ways.

Step 1: Determine what size bag you need.

It will be dependent on what you plan to use it for.You need to know the dimensions of the item you are wrapping for a gift bag.Consider what you want to carry in a tote bag.

Step 2: You can choose your paper.

If the paper is large enough for your gift and sturdy enough to hold some weight, you can use any kind of paper you want.If you want a holiday bag, use wrapping paper.Birthdays, holidays, and weddings all come with wrapping paper. If you want to be rustic or eco-friendly, use craft paper, a cut up paper bag, or newspaper. If you want a better bag, use a thicker paper.

Step 3: Take your tools with you.

You will need paper, scissors, tape, glue, and a stapler for this project. You need a hole punch, string, ribbon, or twine to add handles.Add any extra decorations, such as Ribbon Glitter Stickers or other adornments.

Step 4: Measure the paper.

You need to make sure the bag is large enough to fit the item.If you are using wrapping paper on a roll, you should fold it in half.To make sure the item is smaller than the paper, place it in the center of the folder paper.Wrap the paper in the size you need.If you want a snug fit for your item, trim paper slightly. You can make a large bag with an entire sheet of newspaper, or you can use a half sheet for a smaller bag.If you want to make a more durable bag, you should glue two sheets of thin paper together.Use a spray or glue stick.

Step 5: Take out your paper.

Put it on a hard surface. To mark the halfway point, fold it in half and crease it at the top of the paper. The paper should be opened back up.

Step 6: Make a border.

If you’re making an open-topped bag with handles, you can make a reinforcing border by folding the top of the paper in half.To mark the fold, make a crease.Cut out a strip of paper with the same width as your border.Glue it to the paper.Glue the border in place after folding it back down.If the paper is the same color on both sides, leave the border as it is and move on.If your paper has a design on both sides, flip the paper over so that the border is on the outside.

Step 7: A basic bag shape can be made.

You can fold both sides of the paper into the center crease.Overlap them by 12 inch.Hold the seam together with one hand, and crease the two side folds with your other hand. The top and bottom of your bag are visible.Glue, tape, or staple the half-inch seam in the center together.Try to use a thin, lightweight glue, such as a glue stick or rubber cement.White glue can be applied in a thin layer. Before moving on to the next step, be sure to give the glue a few minutes to dry.Thin, clear, double-sided tape is better for tape use.If they are thin enough, you can use glue-dots.The thick, white foam mounting tape will make your bag look weird.Staplers are only able to reach so far. They may be better for smaller bags or ones with a rustic look.

Step 8: The bag bottom needs to be sized.

Measure the width of your gift item to see how wide the bag needs to be.As your bag width, write this number down.To fold up the bottom of the bag, add 12 inch (1.27 centimeters) to that and crease it.

Step 9: The bag bottom should be created.

Reopen the fold you just made. The bottom of the paper is divided into two pieces. If you want to line up the side crease with the bottom crease, start with one side and push the other side inward. The side should now look like a triangle. To crease the two new edges of the triangle, hold it in place with one hand and use the other. On the other side, repeat. The bag’s bottom should now be hexagonal.

Step 10: The top and bottom of the hexagon are folded.

They should be folded just enough so they overlap by 12 inch.Glue or tape the flaps down.Allow them to dry.The bottom of your bag has been created by this.White glue is a better substitute for glue if you are using it.Let the glue dry before moving on.It is possible to use thin, clear double-sided tape, but it may not create the most durable bottom.Plan on using the bag for lightweight gifts if you use double-sided tape.

Step 11: You should shape your bag.

The sides of the bag should be folded over. You can open the bag from the top by opening the side and bottom folds.Use your fingers to work out the corners.Pull the bottom sides together to create a fold. The sides should be adjusted so they form nice, square corners. If you want a quick gift bag, insert your gift and pinch the top together.Either fold it down and tape it as is, or create a triangle by folding the sides in and taping it shut. The quick bag is ready to be gifted.

Step 12: You should decorate your bag.

You can use any decorations you want, such as glitter, stickers, flowers or bows, to personalize your bag.If your bag is made out of solid-colored paper, you can make it look more interesting by painting on designs. You can either use a stencil or go free-hand.A solid colored bag can be decorated with stickers or stamps. If your bag has a pattern, use matching glitter glue to outline parts of it.Attach buttons or small paper flowers to your bag.The bag has some ribbon or lace on it.

Step 13: Add handles.

The sides of the bag should be collapsed. To mark the spots where you want the handles to go, use a pen or pencil. The hole puncher can go through both sides of the bag.Cut two long pieces of string, thin rope, or ribbon and thread them through the holes. For thin, sheer ribbon, thread both ends of the ribbon through the holes on the front of your bag.Tie the ends of the bag together. The other ribbon should be used for the back of the bag.If you want a thicker ribbon or rope, thread both ends of a thin rope through the holes in the front of your bag. Each end of the rope needs to be tied into a knot. The bag should have one piece of rope and another piece. The handles can be long or short. You should be able to slip the handles over your arm.If you want the holes to be stronger, use a metal grommet through each hole.

Step 14: The bag could be closed with a ribbon.

It is possible to finish your bag with a ribbon.Close the top half of the bag and flatten it.If you want to fold the lip toward the back of the bag, you have to do it twice. There are two holes in the center of the lip that are three to four inches apart.Place your gift inside when you open the bag.An extra few inches of ribbon or twine is needed to make a bow.Refold the lip twice and flatten out the top of the bag. From the back, run each end of a piece of ribbon through the holes to the front of the bag.Attach the ribbon to the bow.

Step 15: An accordion top is needed.

If you want a bag that is more ornamental, you can make an accordion top and seal it with a bow.Put your gift in the bag.The sides fold inward and the front and back come together if the top of the bag is collapsed. The bag should be folded down by 12 inch. The top should be folded down by another 12 inch.Continue folding the bag down until you have done this many times. The folds look like an accordion.Pinch down the center, wrap a ribbon around the bag, and tie a bow in the accordion folds to keep them in place.

Step 16: The bag can be folded using its existing creases.

You can jazz up old paper shopping bags to use for gifts instead of making a new bag out of paper.Lay the bag flat.

Step 17: If necessary, iron the bag to get rid of wrinkling.

Put the bag down so that it doesn’t move. The iron should be turned on to the lowest setting.Put the iron over the bag.Don’t linger on any spots to avoid burning the bag, and keep the iron moving. It’s a good idea to iron out any flaws.

Step 18: You should decorate your bag.

It’s up to you to decorate your bag.You can either make it fancy or plain.Try to match the pattern or color scheme of your bag as best you can.If you have a delicate white and silver bag, some silver ribbon or delicate lace might look better than clunky red and yellow buttons.Draw or paint on the paper of your bag if it is solid colored.A plain bag can be decorated with stickers or stamps. It could look like a pattern if you keep the shapes consistent. If you already have a design on your bag, you can use glitter glue to outline some of it.For added flair, you can glue on rhinestones. There is a ribbon or lace along the top edge of the bag.Attach small buttons or rhinestones to a bag. It’s a good idea to use buttons to add a homemade touch to the bags.

Step 19: It’s time to finish the top.

Take a look at the handles once you have decorated the bag.Do they need something else?Does the rope still match the bag?Take out the old handles and replace them with new ones. The new ones don’t have to be the same as the old ones, but you might want to make the new ribbon or rope match the bag.To add handles to a bag that doesn’t have any, fold the top down and glue it in place.Add handles by punching two holes on each side. The bag should be sealed with a sticker or bow.Put the gift inside the bag by cutting out the handles. The top should be folded by 1 to 2 inches.Hold the folded top down with a gift bow that matches the bag’s design. The bag should be sealed with a ribbon.Put the gift inside the bag by cutting out the handles. The top should be folded by 1 to 2 inches. There are two holes in the folded top. From the back of the bag, thread both ends of a ribbon. There is a bow at the front of the bag.
