How To Install Spotlights on Your Vehicle

A spotlight on your vehicle can help you see the ground when driving off the road or in low light.It is important to know that using a spotlight on public streets is illegal in many areas, so make sure you check the laws in your region.Even though spotlights can be installed without a relay, it is still recommended that you use one for optimal performance.

Step 1: The battery needs to be disconnected.

The battery in your vehicle needs to be disconnected before you can work with the electronic system.To remove the black ground cable from the negative terminal on the battery, open the hood and use a hand or sockets wrench.Tuck the cable to the side of the battery to prevent it from coming back into contact with the terminal.The negative terminal can be found by looking at the battery.The positive cable won’t be disconnected.

Step 2: It’s a good idea to choose a suitable mounting location.

Pick a location that is best for your purposes, as there are a number of places one could mount a spotlight.On the roof of the vehicle or on top of your side mirror are some common locations.In order to cut the proper lengths of wire, you will need to identify the location you intend to mount the spot light.If you install a spotlight on your roof, you will have to drill through it to get it.

Step 3: Decide what type of light you want to use.

There are spotlights and installation kits on the market.There are three types of spotlights you can buy.Each style of light has its own strengths and weaknesses and should be chosen based on application and budget.Most of the time, the dimmest lights are the halogen lights.The bulbs are less expensive to replace when they blow out.The cost of the lights can be more than that of a halogen spotlight.The most expensive lamps are the ones with the longest lifespan.

Step 4: Determine where you want to put the switch.

You can install a button or switch inside your vehicle to turn the spotlight on and off.On a lot of spotlights, the switch will be on the light itself.The installation will be more in depth if you wire the light to a switch on your dashboard.If you decide to run a switch for a light, leave the switch on the light set to “on”How much wire the project will require depends on where you want the switch to be.

Step 5: There is a relay in the engine bay.

If you didn’t have an electrical relay, you’ll need to install one.Most stoplights don’t need to be wired directly to a power source.Purchase a single pole single throw relay from your local auto parts store if your kit didn’t come with one.You can put it in the engine bay along the body of the vehicle.The heat may damage the relay if it is mounted too close to the exhaust manifolds.You can mount the relay with either heavy duty double sided tape or drill holes through the metal.

Step 6: The relay should be ground.

A short length of black wire should be run from the relay to the bolt on the frame of the vehicle.If you want to loop the exposed wire around the head, you have to open a length of wire at the end and make a loop with it.Attach the wire to the bolt by twisting it around.The ground for the relay circuit will be provided by this wire.Black wiring is used to make grounds easy to identify.

Step 7: Attach a wire from the relay to the in-line fuse.

Attach the in-line fuse holder to the positive post on the relay.You may need to run wire from the positive post to the in-line fuse holder if you can’t connect it directly.Make sure the spotlight has a rated fuse in it.If there is an issue with your electrical system, the spotlight and relay will be protected by this fuse.If there is too much power flowing through the fuse, it will blow out and cause a fire.

Step 8: The positive terminal is on the battery.

A length of wire should be run from the fuse holder to the positive terminal.You can either wrap exposed wire around a bolt on the battery cable or buy a new Positive cable end.Attach the positive cable and the wire from the relay’s fuse into the end, then use pliers to compress the cable end until the wires are securely in place.The power to the relay and spotlight will be provided by this wire.Attach the cable to the positive terminal.The spotlight will fail if it is loose.

Step 9: The relay needs to go to the positive post.

Run a wire from the relay to the spotlight.You can either solder the wire into place or twist it around.Wrap the wiring in electrical tape or shrink wrap to protect it from the elements.The strongest and most permanent way to connect the wiring is to solder it.

Step 10: You can run a wire from the relay to the switch.

Run a wire from the last open post on the relay to the switch in your vehicle.The switch will be able to cut the power to the spotlight.You can run the wire through a hole in the driver’s side of the vehicle.The wire will come out near the pedals.The corner where the hood, fender and driver’s side door meet is where you should put the wire if you can’t run it through the firewall.Don’t run the wire through anything that might melt or break it in the regular use of your vehicle.

Step 11: The mounting holes need to be drilled.

The hardware in your spotlight kit can be used to mount the light.If it was mounted on your roof, it may come with a strip of weather proof material to prevent water from leaking through the holes.Silicone may be put around the holes if it did not, as you bolt the light into place to create a waterproof seal.You don’t need to use weather proof if you mount the light on your mirror.No drilling or weather proof is required for the mounting of a spotlight on a light bar.

Step 12: There is a switch in the dashboard.

You can secure the switch on your dashboard by drilling a hole through the trim and sliding it through it from behind.Only the switch will be visible, with the rest behind the trim.Place the cap over the switch and screw it in to hold it against the trim.It will mount in the same way if you use a button instead of a switch.If you want to use the light while you drive, make the switch easy to access.

Step 13: The switch should be ground.

Just as you ground the relay under the hood, run a black wire from the switch to a bolt on the body or frame of the vehicle.Wrap the exposed end of the wire around the bolt.Once completed, tighten the bolt back into place.The switch needs its own power source.

Step 14: You can run a wire from the switch to the power source.

The driver’s side of the vehicle has a fuse box.The radio, headlights, or turn signals are all electronic devices that only work when the vehicle is running.You can connect the wire from the switch if you remove the fuse and insert the add-a-circuit or standard blade fuse holder.The spotlight won’t work when the vehicle is not running.The switch needs to be powered by a fuse in the holder.Check the instructions for the spotlight to make sure you use the correct amount of power for it to work.

Step 15: Attach the wiring by Tucking up.

To keep the wiring out of sight, connect the battery and tuck it away.If you want to prevent yourself from accidentally catching the extra wire under the dash, use zip ties under your dashboard.To keep the wiring from being visible, tuck it under or between the panels of the body.Attach the battery and test the spotlight.If the light doesn’t turn on, make sure the wires are not pulled off their terminals or crimped to interrupt the flow of electricity.
