You have pushed your elbow beyond its limits.A hyperextended elbow can usually heal with some rest and ice.If you hyperextend your elbow it can cause a sprain, which is the stretching or tearing of a ligament.It can tear the articular capsule, but that is very rare.If you hear a popping sound, apply ice and see your doctor.
Step 1: Ice should be applied to the injured area.
You will know when you overextend your elbow because of the pain.If you hurt your elbow, apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth as soon as possible.It can keep the swelling down if you leave it on for 10 minutes at a time.Don’t apply the ice to your skin.There is a cloth between the ice and your elbow.
Step 2: You should elevate your elbow above your heart.
If you sit on the ground, place your elbow on a chair or cushion.Lifting your elbow will help prevent and relieve swelling.
Step 3: Wrap a bandage around your elbow.
Wrap the end of the bandage around your elbow to provide compression.This will make it hard for your elbow to heal.If you lose feeling in your arm, loosen the bandage.The bandage wrap is sold in a roll.It can be found in the first aid section of convenience stores.
Step 4: Rest your elbow.
While your elbow is injured, keep it as still as possible.The elbow should be bandaged to help it heal and prevent re-injury.Don’t move it as much as you can, and keep it wrapped.
Step 5: If you hear a pop, go to the doctor.
If you hear a popping sound when you hyperextend your elbow, it’s time to go to the doctor.That could mean you tore your ligament.The doctor will take an x-ray to see if there is a break in the bone.
Step 6: If you are in pain, take over-the-counter pain medications.
You can take drugs to help you deal with the initial pain.Talk to your doctor if these aren’t helping after a day or two.You can take 400 milligrams every 4 to 6 hours.In a 24 hour period, do not exceed 3000 milligrams.You can take 650 to 1,000 milligrams of the drug every 4 to 6 hours.Don’t exceed 4,000 in a day.Don’t go over 3000 milligrams in a day if you’re taking extra strength.
Step 7: You can use a sling.
If your doctor recommends it, you should wear a sling to keep your arm immobile.You may need to wear a sling for a while.A sling will hold your elbow at a right angle.
Step 8: There is a cast for a more serious injury.
If you have a more serious injury, your doctor may recommend a cast.You may need to wear one of these solutions for up to 3 weeks to keep the elbow immobile.
Step 9: If you have to be more active, try taping your elbow.
Even if the doctor doesn’t want you to use your elbow, you can.If you do, you can use athletic tape to help prevent overextension.The best way to keep your arm immobile is to tape it.
Step 10: Allow the elbow to rest.
The sling, cast, or tape will help you rest your arm for a few days.Make sure you don’t do things that cause pain in your arm.If you do too much, you could hurt your elbow.
Step 11: During the recovery period, use ice on your elbow.
Ice can help with swelling.Ice can be applied 3 to 4 times a day.Don’t keep it on for more than 20 minutes.Wrap the ice in cloth.It’s a good idea to put ice on your skin.
Step 12: If you have swelling, apply a compression bandage.
Keeping swelling down can be accomplished by wrapping your arm in an elastic bandage.It can reduce pain.An elastic bandage will only work with a sling, as a cast or tape will apply their own compression.
Step 13: The elbow should be above the heart level.
gravity encourages more blood flow to the area when your elbow is below your heartIncreased swelling can occur when your elbow is injured.Rest your elbow on pillows so that it’s above your heart to help prevent this issue.When you’re asleep, elevate your elbow as often as you can.
Step 14: Ask about surgery for injuries.
You may need to have surgery to repair the damage to your elbow.If you also have a severe strain in the muscle, the doctor will only perform surgery on you.The doctor may recommend surgery for a torn capsule.
Step 15: Discuss therapy with your doctor.
Physical therapy can help you heal from an injury.The best person to make this decision is your doctor.A physical therapist can teach you exercises to strengthen your elbow.
Step 16: For the first 3 days, skip the heat.
It may sound like a good idea, but heat may do more harm than good.Don’t use heat sources like saunas, hot baths, or hot pads while your elbow heals.
Step 17: Don’t drink alcohol.
Your healing process can be slowed by drinking alcohol.It can make swelling worse.It’s best to stay away from alcohol for the first 3 days or so.
Step 18: Don’t rub the area.
If you get an injury, you may want to massage it to make it better.If you have to, try to skip it for the first 3 days or so.
