Presenteeism is a phenomenon in today’s high-pressure job market in which many workers feel the need to come to work even when sick.One-third of US workers admit to taking a sick day when they aren’t ill.It will be easier for you to keep your boss and co-workers happy and healthy if you follow sensible procedures to determine when and how to call in sick.If there is a public health crisis like the COVID-19 Pandemic, it’s not a good idea to pretend that you aren’t sick. It’s possible to scare or worry other people.
Step 1: Think of your co-workers.
Even if you aren’t best friends with everyone in your workplace, you should be able to keep everyone well.If you are contagious, stay home.Don’t go into work if you’re coughing, sneezing, or have an open wound.Imagine if the guy in the next cubicle sneezes on the copy machine and you are healthy.Cold symptoms and seasonal allergies are not usually worthy of a sick day, so don’t confuse them. There are some differences between the two maladies, but allergies should not cause a body ache or a fever. You should talk to your doctor if you get a cold at the same time every year.Be aware of any colleagues that may be at higher risk for illness.Co-workers who are pregnant, immune-compromised, or undergoing cancer treatments are more likely to fall ill.You don’t have to give everyone extra work when you’re away. You are helping them by keeping your germs at home.
Step 2: Take a peek at your potential effectiveness.
How helpful are you going to be at work if you can’t stand up, see straight, or stay awake? If you are useless the entire day, your boss will not be happy. It’s best to be productive when present and absent. You wouldn’t go in if you called in sick every time you felt less than 100%.Determine if you can put in a legitimate day of work.
Step 3: You should consider your options.
Many of us already do a lot of our work from home.Do you need a work-from- home day or a no-work-at-all day?If your job duties permit it, you can work from home.Don’t offer to work from home if you’re too sick to do it.Rest is usually needed to help you get better. If you are hesitant to call in sick at all, or to do so without offering to work from home, because of pressure from your supervisor, consider ways to advocate for more sensible sick-day policies at your job.Talk to your co-workers about the benefits of paid sick days.
Step 4: Before a sick day arrives, prepare.
If you are a supervisor or part of a team, you may be more hesitant to take a sick day out of fear that you will ruin everyone else’s workday. If you suspect that tomorrow could be a sick day, you should create a list of tasks for your colleagues/subordinates in your absence. If you are out, place it on your desk so it can be easily found the next day.Keeping a list of tasks in my absence is probably a good idea.In your absence, you can provide direction and leadership.
Step 5: You can observe your boss’s response to sick days.
Does he blow a gasket if someone calls in sick?Does she prefer notices by text or email over a phone call? These observations can be used to determine when and how to call in sick.Fear of upsetting the boss is one reason why the average American worker takes five sick days a year.Your boss will respond to legitimate sick day requests in the best case scenario. You will have to be persistent to get a sick day even when you really need it.
Step 6: You need to call in.
If you are lucky, you may be able to send your boss a text or email on a sick day.It is likely that you will have to go through an actual phone conversation. When you call in sick, you attach greater respect, seriousness, and legitimacy to your request. It’s important to decide when to call. You might wake your boss up if you call too early. It’s disrespectful to leave everyone in the lurch by calling too late. When you wake up and leave for work is the best time to call.It is obvious that it is not happening today.
Step 7: Don’t milk it.
He/she does not need the gory details of your morning spent bent over the toilet to know that you are actually sick.Explain why you need to stay home.By knowing your boss and how he or she responds to sick day requests, you will have a better idea of how much detail you need to provide regarding your particular illness, symptoms, etc.faking symptoms for effect is not a good idea unless you are certain of your phone acting skills. If you have a persistent cough or a scratchy voice, you are more likely to get suspicion than sympathy. If you are sick and unable to come in, apologize, but don’t feel guilty. You are doing everyone a favor.
Step 8: When you return to work, be thoughtful.
If you stayed home the day before because you were sick, you don’t need to tell everyone about it.You should probably not act like you feel better than ever.Extra common courtesy is in order. If there are any efforts made to pick up the slack in your absence, be grateful and apologetic. You can show your co-workers that you care about their health by practicing good hygiene. When you get to the office, wash your hands with soap and water, and then put the hand-sanitizer bottle on your desk.War should be declared on any remaining infections.
Step 9: It’s a good idea to pick the right time for a sick day.
If you’re going to call in sick, you should take a look at your calendar to make sure that the day you choose isn’t the perfect day to be off from work.It will seem like you’re trying to carve out a nice little three-day weekend for yourself if you pick a Friday or a Monday.Whether it’s been for a real illness or not, make sure you don’t take too many days off.You don’t want to look like a person who is always looking for a day off.Make sure you go to work every day for at least two months before you play hooky.Don’t pick a day when everyone dreads a meeting or when a client knows you’re not on good terms. It’s obvious that you’re trying to avoid work on that day. It’s not a good idea to pick a big sporting event in your town.Your excuse won’t work if everyone knows you’re a fan of a certain team and you want to go to a game.Don’t pick a Monday after the Super Bowl if you’re American. This is a big drinking day for many Americans, and it will be obvious if you call in because you’re hung over.
Step 10: You should act sick the day before.
If you choose the sick day of your dreams, you should give signs of an illness at work the day before. If you were cracking up in the coffee lounge one day and then getting sick the next, it will look suspicious.Overselling your fake illness can be an obvious sign to your boss and co-workers, so aim for mild indications. It’s a good idea to cough or sniffle once in a while.Mention that you don’t have an appetite during lunch.Look unkempt.Don’t tuck your shirt all the way if you’re a man.If you’re a woman, wear less makeup and don’t wash your hair, it will give you a tired look.Remember, you want to look like you’re getting sick, not like a slob. It’s not a good idea to be too obvious about your illness.People will ask how you are feeling after hearing your cough or sniffle.Try to get rid of it.Say, “No, really, I’m fine” or “I am just a little tired today”Tea is a good alternative to coffee if you’re a big coffee drinker. You should hold your hands to your head.Take pain medication at work.If you bring a full bottle of pills to work, everyone can hear the pills shaking in the bottle when you take them out.It has to be convincing to pretend to take the pills. You should be more reserved that day.Be friendly to everyone, but don’t go out of your way.Say you’re not feeling up to it if your coworkers invite you to happy hour or lunch.Mention that you’re not feeling well at the end of the day but will be able to sleep over the weekend if you take a Monday off. When you call on Monday, you can mention how you started feeling terrible over the weekend and that you’re feeling a bit better, but not recovered.
Step 11: Prepare for the call.
When you get home, you should prepare for your phone call. You should be prepared for anything that may come up during your call. You should know your illness inside out.Is it a cold or something else?A cold or a migraine are good excuses. It’s not a good idea to pick an illness that will take a long time to recover from, such as strep throat or food poisoning.Don’t give too much information about your illness. You want the call to be short and sweet. You can give answers if your boss asks about it.You should be prepared for any questions your boss may ask.Know when your illness started, how you think you will feel tomorrow, and what you’ll be doing that day to recover.Listen to your conversation again. It’s possible to practice on a close friend.Don’t just read from a paper when you’re making the call, you can try writing down what you will say to help you rehearse.
Step 12: Make it count.
This is the time of truth for faking a sick day.You are home free if you make a convincing call. You will end up with an angry boss and walking papers if you do it wrong. You can improve your odds of success by calling at the right time. It’s a good idea to make your phone call early. You should call your boss early after you’ve prepared for the call.Don’t wake him up by calling so early. It looks like you woke up and realized you weren’t feeling well enough to go to work if you call right around the time you normally wake up.It sounded sick during the call. It’s important to sound convincing if you’re talking to your boss or leaving a voicemail. It’s possible to sound like you’re coming down with something when you cough or sniff during the call.Even though fake coughs can be obvious, a well- placed cough or sniffle can do the trick.Make your voice weak. You can make your throat ache by screaming into a pillow, or make sure you don’t drink water before the call. You can call while lying down and having your head hang upside-down, but make sure this doesn’t distract you and make you forget what you were going to say.
Step 13: Don’t be sick at work the next day.
If you showed up to work excited about life, it would be suspicious. If you act like you’re feeling better after your cold, you should still show signs of the illness. To keep everyone’s good side as well, remember to practice particularly good hygiene.Don’t groom yourself the same way.You don’t have to look like a slob, but your hair, face, and clothes should look a little disheveled.Don’t forget to yourself more than usual.Blow your nose or cough. You have to miss a day of work.Don’t wear a tan or a new outfit. This will show you spent the day in the sun or shopping.
