At some point during your education, you will realize that you are too busy to get everything done.The challenge of balancing all the different aspects of student life is common and makes sense.To meet all of your responsibilities, you can learn to manage a busy schedule.Establish and maintain an organized schedule, avoid distraction, and practice productive time-management behavior.
Step 1: A master schedule is created.
You probably have weekly responsibilities as a student.Your most important due dates and exams will be notified in advance.Start a master schedule with this information.If you use an online calendar, make sure to enter your weekly commitment and important date as soon as you are aware of them.Also include other regular activities, such as a fixed work schedule and commute time.You can either keep an electronic calendar file on your desktop or post a paper master calendar above your desk.As your course load or work schedule changes, expect to re-create your master schedule.Use a weekly planner.Weekly planners, which are usually small enough to carry with you, can be great scheduling tools.You can add this information to your weekly planners as well.
Step 2: Make sure to read your syllabus.
The syllabus is the most important reading assignment.The day you get it, input all of the important information into your master schedule.You don’t need to record a lot of details because you will want to make more specific plans one week at a time.
Step 3: Carry your schedule with you.
You should still carry a weekly paper schedule, even if it’s more convenient to keep your master calendar on an electronic platform.Each week should be printed as a one-page gridded document.This will allow you to write down a more flexible, specific schedule for the week, and already have your weekly commitment and forthcoming dates.Your weekly print out contains your recurring commitments.What pages of a book you need to read before a certain day can be added to the specifics.Your schedule is always with you and ready to be checked at a moment’s notice, which is perhaps the greatest benefit of a weeklyplanner.
Step 4: Each week add details.
On your weekly schedule, include meetings, social events, and all of the extracurricular components of your life.You can improve your ability to prioritize tasks and meet your responsibilities by writing down all of your commitments in an organized fashion.Don’t forget to eat and sleep.The life of a busy student can lead to missed meals and late-night study sessions.Schedule healthy eating and sleeping times every day so that they don’t become a habit.
Step 5: It is a good idea to block off time to study.
Each week, dedicate a certain amount of time to study and prepare for your classes.If you don’t spend enough time on each class, the amount of time will likely change from week to week.Block off 2 hours per week to prepare for easier classes, and 4 hours to get ready for harder classes.Immediately prior to each of your classes, you can schedule a short amount of time.To prepare for the class, you need to review material and focus on class content.You can keep up with classes you find challenging with a review session immediately following each class.
Step 6: Keep a to-do list.
To make sure you complete your daily tasks, keep a to-do list.Write your to-do list on your weekly calendar.You can use a landscape layout with a column for each day of your master schedule.At the bottom of the column, write down all the tasks you need to complete.Doing laundry, going shopping, or remembering to get a new 3-ring binder are some of the tasks on the to-do list.
Step 7: A daily scheduling session is needed.
To plan out the next 24 hours, take a few minutes every day.It’s a good idea to get either before you go to bed or the first thing in the morning.Add anything you need to get done to your to-do list and look over the week.
Step 8: Schedule exercise and socializing.
Regular exercise can help decrease stress, improve your general health, and even help you meet the demands of a busy schedule.It’s important to exercise at least once a week.Each week is a good time to participate in a team activity.Make sure that a chunk of the weekend is devoted to decompression.You can nap on the beach or pencil in a hike.It will help you prepare for another busy week if you get out on the dance floor one evening.
Step 9: It’s a good idea to re-prioritize daily tasks.
Stated otherwise, be flexible.Are you starting to get stressed out because you are spending more time researching than planned?Go for a jog.Don’t let your schedule keep you from what you need to do, it’s not written in stoneDo you have a lot of tasks for the day?You can call off the date later.The sooner you do so the better.
Step 10: There are productive spaces where you can study.
The space you spend time in affects your productivity.It’s best to go wherever you’re least likely to be distracted.For some students, this is at home, for others, the library, and for some, a busy coffee shop.
Step 11: You can use headphones.
Things you hear can distract you.If you like studying in silence, wear noise-canceling headphones.White noise will be played by some models.If you want to improve your ability to focus, play ambient electronic or classical music.
Step 12: The apps distract you.
You may think that this step is unimportant.Close the app and get back to work if you find yourself on the photo sharing site.Remove this app from your phone if it keeps pulling you away from more productive behavior.
Step 13: Use small amounts of time to be productive.
The bus is not coming for a while.It’s a good idea to open up your email instead of using a dating app.Send your question to your professor or employer.Carrying notecards with notes from one of your more challenging classes is even better.You can take a bathroom break to prepare for the organic chemistry exam.
Step 14: You should be rewarded for achieving your goals.
It’s a good idea to call a friend later in the evening after a few hours of studying.It is possible to enhance your focus by giving yourself something to look forward to.Concentration and relaxation are more productive than studying with calls or texts.If you notice yourself becoming distracted, return to work and remind yourself that you have plans to socialize later in the evening.This will help keep you focused.
Step 15: Acknowledge the constant distraction.
If something is keeping you from meeting your responsibilities, put down whatever you are trying to get done and address the distraction.Give yourself a few minutes to pay attention.After addressing something that distracts you, you are more likely to focus.
Step 16: Specific, measurable tasks are assigned to you.
It is important to establish goals for yourself.Specific goals are more helpful for study sessions if you are working towards more comprehensive accomplishments.If you want to read for philosophy class, give yourself the goal of reading 15 pages of Sartre and writing a few paragraphs about the test.Instead of studying for the biology exam, establish the goal to complete the 2nd chapter.
Step 17: It is necessary to work towards realistic goals.
A realistic amount of time is needed to reach your goals.It isn’t helpful to set a goal of studying for 28 hours next week.You can reach 28 hours of studying if you study 4 hours every day next week.
Step 18: When thoughts arise, work when they arise.
It is already late for you to start a paper tomorrow.An idea comes to you.Sitting down to record your thoughts is a great way to take advantage of these moments.You don’t necessarily need to start writing, but you can get a head start on tomorrow’s tasks by reading the paper and writing down your specific topic.You can use the Notes app on your phone or carry around a small notebook and pen.
Step 19: Take a break.
Break up study sessions for longer than 90 minutes.The plan is to study for 90 minutes at a time, with 15 minutes breaks between focused sessions.Establish a schedule that includes 3 hours of studying each day, broken into multiple study sessions.If you can, study during the day as opposed to the evening, as your mind will be able to focus better and your memory will retain more.
Step 20: Don’t forget to reflect on long term goals.
You can spend a few minutes reflecting on your long-term goals once a month.Is the way you spend your time contributing to the achievement of those goals?To make sure you are on track to meet your goals, look for ways to change your schedule and behavior.
