Get rid of fruit flies.

Did fruit flies beat you to the fruit bowl? These guests know how to overstay their welcome. There are several ways to keep fruit flies out of your home.

Step 1: The base of the trap should be a tall jar, wine bottle, old soda bottle or vase.

In a pinch, almost any jar will work. The most efficient way to trap a lot of fruit flies is this method.

Step 2: Add fruit fly bait.

There are a lot of options at your disposal.Fruit flies will fly into your trap if you have any type of fruit, juice, soda, or other sweet item.Try one of the bait ideas ranked from the least effective to the most effective: chopped up fruit.A few slices of bruised banana, a soft strawberry or squishy peach will work well.Maple syrup, honey, or corn syrup. There are any flavors of soda or fruit juice.Diet soda won’t work if you use the regular kind.Apple cider or soy sauce can be used.In a pinch, the dregs from a wine or beer bottle can work. The sugars in alcoholic beverages attract fruit flies.

Step 3: Put a piece of paper on the container to make a funnel.

The flies won’t be smart enough to leave the jar if there is a funnel with a small hole.To keep the funnel’s shape, tape it.The narrow side of the container should be pointed down if the funnel is left inside. The bait should not be touched by the tip of the funnel.A piece of scrap paper can be turned into a paper funnel.A toothpick can be used to poke a hole in a coffee filter.

Step 4: There is a fruit fly-infested area.

It’s best to put it near the kitchen sink, garbage can, or fruit bowl.If you’re dealing with fruit flies in multiple parts of the kitchen, you might want to set more traps. The traps should be left out overnight. You should see fruit flies eating the bait by the next day.If you didn’t catch any flies, try a new bait and make sure the hole is big enough to let the flies into the trap.

Step 5: The flies are trapped.

The container should hold warm water and dish soap. The soap causes the flies to drown by reducing the surface tension of the water.Wait a minute or two and discard the contents of the jar.Take the trap outside if it is still buzzing with fruit flies. When you’re done, rinse the jar with hot water. You can use it to make a new trap.

Step 6: Continue until the trap is empty.

Fruit flies can grow quickly. The life cycle can be as short as eight days.It is likely that you will have to repeat the trapping process several times to rid your kitchen of fruit flies.Fruit fly eggs hatch eight to ten days after they are laid, so you may need to use the trapping process every day for a week or two. When you no longer see flies in your trap, you can stop.To get rid of fruit flies and eggs at the same time, take measures.

Step 7: Get a large or medium bowl.

Although not quite as effective as the paper funnel method, this method uses the same approach: lure the fruit flies into the trap with a small opening and make it hard for them to exit.

Step 8: Sweet bait can be placed at the bottom of a large bowl.

You probably want at least an inch of sweet liquid covering the bottom of the bowl, the type of bait doesn’t matter as much as the quantity.Put a piece of old, skinless fruit, such as an orange or a banana, along with some balsamic vinaigrette in a bowl.Try a mix of white wine and Coriander seeds. The mixture seems to work well.To make it even more potent, add a bit of white wine vinegar. In a pinch, a mix of honey, sugar, and balsamic vinegar can be used.

Step 9: Wrap the bowl tightly.

To cover the bowl, use a large sheet of plastic wrap. The plastic wrap can be difficult to get.

Step 10: There are a lot of small holes in the plastic.

Large holes can let flies escape back out, so try to keep the holes small. It is extremely difficult to get back out of the bowl if you lure the fruit flies into it.If using a fork makes the holes too big, you can use a sharp toothpick to pierce the plastic wrap.

Step 11: Leave the trap out overnight in the fruit fly-infested area.

Fruit flies will happily feast on the bait after they are caught inside the plastic wrap.Make sure the holes in your plastic wrap are not too big if you haven’t been able to trap flies.

Step 12: Disregard the flies.

It’s a good idea to take the trap outside before you kill the fruit flies. The fruit flies can be killed by pouring a mixture of warm water and dish soap into the container. The soap causes the flies to drown by reducing the surface tension of the water.Wait a minute or two and discard the contents of the jar. When you’ve flushed the fruit flies, rinse the jar with hot water and use it to make a new trap.

Step 13: Get two jars.

Larger jars are more difficult to deal with.

Step 14: You can put fruit scraps into jars as bait.

Step 15: The jars should be thrown away.

Wrap the jar openings in clear plastic.

Step 16: Press down in the center of the plastic wrap.

The shape of the plastic going down into the jars can be made.

Step 17: Take a small hole in the center of the dents.

It seems like you wouldn’t be able to trap all the flies with one hole.It is.

Step 18: Wait for flies to be trapped.

If you notice flies in one jar, put it in the freezer. If you notice flies in another jar, put it in the freezer and then put the one that has been there for a while. You just have to keep rotating the jars in and out of the freezer. You don’t have to deal with cleaning the trap or trying to kill the flies.

Step 19: Fruit fly spray can be made.

The bottle should be filled with 70% rubbing alcohol. It can be sprayed on fruit flies. You can dispose of them when they fall to the floor. You can use rubbing alcohol in the air and saturate eggs. The stronger alcohol kills them immediately. The stronger alcohol option can cost more.It is more powerful than 70% rubbing alcohol.Ventilating the area and wearing gloves are precautionary measures. It’s far less dangerous than an insect or pesticide. Most small bugs are killed by Windex. If you find fruit flies in an area you are willing to get wet, give them a few sprays of Windex and watch them suffer.Another way to spray is with Clorox cleaning spray.Dead flies can be wiped down after. If you are spraying near food preparation surfaces or if you’re worried about toxic indoor air, you should not do it.A fine mist bottle can be used to spray mobs of flies with plain water. They can’t fly because their wings are damp, so you can squash them and clean them up.

Step 20: Pyrethrin spray can be used.

Pyrethrin works to kill adult fruit flies, but not their eggs. It’s important to use it according to the instructions. It’s a good idea to avoid spraying it over fruit or food preparation areas. The aerosol can can be used to spray fruit flies. They are killed on contact.Automatic pyrethrin dispensers can be used to deal with high volumes of fruit flies.

Step 21: The drain should be treated with gel.

There are drain gels on the market that are made to repel fruit flies and eggs.Try a gel if boiling water and soap don’t work.Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. You may have to repeat a number of times to get rid of the flies.

Step 22: You can try a professional treatment.

If you have a fruit fly problem, you can have your home treated with a residual insecticide that you spray where fruit flies congregate. This measure is usually unnecessary if you store produce and keep your kitchen clean. If you want to have your home sprayed for fruit flies, you need to call a pest control company.

Step 23: Determine where they’re breeding.

Fruit flies lay their eggs in rotting fruit and garbage cans.Determine where the flies’ food sources are in your kitchen to get rid of the eggs.Bowls or bags of fruit are to blame.Even if your fruit is brand new, the container you’re storing it in might have leftover produce that’s still attracting fruit flies.Compost may be a food source for fruit flies. If the bag contains beer or soda cans, fruit flies will be attracted to it.How long have you washed your garbage can?The receptacle could be the source of the problem if you take out the trash frequently.Fruit flies can get trapped in kitchen sink drain and rot.Fruit flies can be attracted to damp sponges and mops.

Step 24: Carefully store your produce.

Don’t leave fruit exposed at room temperature when you have a fruit fly problem. You can keep it in the refrigerator until you take care of the fruit flies.A piece of overripe fruit can be a breeding ground for fruit flies.Don’t throw fruit in the trash.Unless you take your trash out daily, don’t throw fruit pits, apple cores and other fruit scraps in the trash in your kitchen since they’ll end up as breeding grounds for fruit flies.Take scraps to an outdoor bin.

Step 25: You should wash your waste receptacle.

Fruit fly eggs can be found in your trash can, recycling bin, and compost bin.As soon as you notice the problem, you should clean the waste receptacle with hot, soapy water. It’s a good idea to take out your trash, recycle or compost often.During the late summer months when fruit fly populations are high, you should wash the containers every week. Before throwing the bottles in the bin, you should rinse them with hot water. The fruit fly problem can be worse if Residue from these items spills on your trash receptacle. All of your waste receptacle should have tight-fitting lids.

Step 26: You should clean your drain.

You can check to see if your drain is a breeding ground for fruit flies by covering it with a piece of plastic wrap and a thin layer of honey.Place it over the drain and come back in an hour or so.The drain is part of the problem if you see fruit flies stuck to the honey.Make sure your drain is working. If your garbage disposal isn’t working, you might have rotting fruit attracting flies down there.Put a pot of boiling soapy water down the drain.Use a brush to clean the drain.Do not pour bleach down the drain. It’s harmful to the environment and doesn’t work.

Step 27: Throw out other breeding sources.

Fruit fly eggs can be found in old sponges, damp mops, and old rags.Use the hot cycle on your washing machine to wash them.

Step 28: The surfaces in the kitchen need to be wiped down.

You can use hot, soapy water to clean your countertops.Make sure you get all the cracks and crevices where fruit flies can congregate. You should clean your cabinets, pantry, and any other places where you store fruit, juices, or other items.Check the floor as well.It might be part of the problem if a drink got spilled under the fridge. It’s a good idea to clean areas that feel sticky. It’s a good idea to keep the kitchen surfaces clean. It’s a good idea to make sure everything is wiped down after each meal. After use, wash all dishes. If you have a dishwasher, shut the door and pop the dishes in to get them ready for the wash.

Step 29: You can inspect the fruit in your kitchen.

Pick through the fruits you bring inside.Fruit fly eggs can be brought in from the grocery store or farmer’s market. Before storing fresh fruit, wash it with water and dry it completely.

Step 30: There is a trap near the fruit bowl.

Fruit flies will be attracted to a small container of cider vinegar, 2 ounces of water, and a drop of dish soap. The population will be kept down by this.During fruit fly season, fill the bowl with fresh mixture every day.

Step 31: Screens can be used to cover your doors and windows.

Fruit flies like outdoor food sources. If you want to prevent them from entering your kitchen, cover the entrances to your home with screens. If you have fruit trees in your yard, this is important.

Step 32: Deal with fruit fly attractants outdoors.

Pick fruit when it’s ready rather than leaving it to rot on the branch or beneath the tree.Pick up or rake away fruit that has fallen to the ground beneath the tree to discourage fruit fly invasion. The branches of the tree can be covered with an exclusion bag.The bag should allow light to reach the fruit and air to circulate without allowing fruit flies to get to it.The bags can be obtained from places that provide organic growers.Purchase organic fruit fly sprays from a garden center. The best way to grow healthy fruit is to use sprays that are non-toxic.

Step 33: The fruit flies with essential oils.

Fruit flies are deterred by the smell of essential oils. The oils will keep flies from accumulating.Put a cup of water and five to ten drops of essential oil in a spray bottle. There are areas in the kitchen that attract fruit flies.
